Carbon Sequestration

気候変動の緩和の可能性を探るために、陸域での炭素隔離への関心が高まっています。炭素隔離とは、大気中の二酸化炭素が光合成によって樹木や草などの植物に取り込まれ、バイオマス（幹、枝、葉、根）や土壌に炭素として蓄積されるプロセスです。

持続可能な森林管理を行うことで、森林の大気中の炭素を吸収する能力を高めるとともに、土壌や水の質の向上など、他の生態系サービスを向上させることができます。新しい木を植えたり、間伐や所定の火入れを行って森林の健康状態を改善することは、長期的に森林の炭素量を増加させる方法の一つです。

政府、企業、個人の二酸化炭素排出量削減への取り組みに呼応して、炭素は今や世界市場で価格のついた環境商品となっています。米国の炭素市場は、まだ形成段階にあります。州や地域では、気候変動戦略や二酸化炭素排出量削減のための政策が策定されており、地域や州レベルで義務的な市場が形成されつつあります。
